Maine IRP and IFTA is an online processing system allowing the State of Maine to manage the requirements of the International Registration Plan (IRP) and the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA). The IRP provides for the equitable and proportionate sharing of interstate truck registration fees based on the percentage of distance traveled in each state or province. IFTA provides uniform administration of motor fuels use taxation laws with respect to motor vehicles operated in multiple member jurisdictions.

Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles is accepting all processes by email, fax and mail. Due to limited staff, processing is taking longer than normal.

To be fair to everyone, we are processing in the order received regardless of transaction or how it arrives in the office.

Starting June 1, phone lines will be open from 9-4 and walk-ins will be accepted by appointment and only if you absolutely cannot do your transactions online. Please contact the office for more information on appointments.

On May 26, 2020, the Governor signed amended Executive Order #53-A mandating that vehicles required to be registered in this State after purchase or transfer of ownership, or for which a registration expires or has expired, be registered by June 11.

If an owners municipality is not open for business, then the registration requirement remains extended.

For existing customers needing to register new units and your town office is closed.
-If you bought from a Maine dealer, your temporary plates are extended indefinitely, and you are wavered to carry loads on those vehicles.
-If you bought through a private sale or from an out of state dealer, you may print the letter below and run legally without plates.

-In all cases please be sure your driver has copies of ownership and insurance paperwork in the unit.

Please be aware, if you do any transactions with your online account, they are not active until a member of the IRP/IFTA team reviews them.
We are monitoring our unit inboxes, if you have questions, please send an email to meirp@maine.gov or ifta.bmv@maine.gov, and someone will assist you.
